Biocontrol in Oilfield Reinjection and Paper White Water? Glutaraldehyde Is Tough

Glutaraldehyde is a classic non-oxidizing biocide whose biggest advantage is its broad applicability — it stays active even in "dirty water" with lots of organics and suspended solids, unlike some oxidizers that get consumed quickly. That's why it has long been active in oilfield reinjection water, paper white water, and industrial recirculating water, especially effective against sulfate-reducing bacteria and biofilm control.

In real applications, Glutaraldehyde is often combined with DBNPA (2,2-Dibromo-3-Nitrilopropionamide) — one long-lasting, one fast-acting, together suppressing the colony with a slow-plus-fast approach. A reminder: glutaraldehyde is somewhat irritating and toxic, so ensure ventilation and personal protection during storage and dosing, and dispose of waste liquid per local regulations — this is both for operator safety and a basic requirement of compliant operation.
